Chandigarh, October 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Punjab Government has completed the construction of 957 out of 1,000 modern Anganwadi Centres being developed across the state under a ₹100-crore project, with work on the remaining centres progressing rapidly, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said on Thursday.

She said the initiative, being implemented under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme in convergence with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), aims to strengthen facilities for child care, nutrition and early childhood education at the village level.

According to the minister, the newly constructed centres will provide a range of essential services, including pre-school education, supplementary nutrition, health check-ups and growth monitoring. They will also improve support for pregnant women and lactating mothers, helping strengthen the health and well-being of children and families.

Dr Baljit Kaur said the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government had prioritised the welfare of women and children, adding that modern Anganwadi infrastructure was intended to provide children with a safe and supportive environment during their formative years.

She said the objective was to ensure that children in villages had access to better nutrition, early learning opportunities and essential care services close to their homes.

The minister also called on parents, Panchayati Raj institutions and local communities to contribute to the proper maintenance and effective use of the new centres. Community participation, she said, would help establish them as active hubs for learning, nutrition, health care and the overall development of children.

Dr Baljit Kaur said the project reflected the state government’s commitment to child development, women’s empowerment and inclusive social welfare. The initiative, she added, was part of the broader effort to build a healthier and more empowered Punjab by giving children a stronger foundation for the future.
