India’s Baby Sahana Ravi created history at the Asian Para Games by winning bronze in the women’s singles Class 9 para table tennis event, securing the country’s first-ever medal in the standing category at the continental competition.
Sahana lost 0-3 to China’s Mao Jingdian in the semi-final but secured a place on the podium with her last-four finish.
Hailing from Hosur in Tamil Nadu, Sahana began playing table tennis in 2014 while studying in Class 5. A year later, she joined Coronation Club under her first coach, Raj Aravindan Alagar, who helped nurture her interest in the sport.
She discontinued regular schooling after Class 9 and continued her education through the National Institute of Open Schooling while dedicating six to eight hours daily to training.
Sahana made her senior multi-sport debut at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and finished fifth at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou later that year. In September 2022, she moved to the SDAT-AKG Table Tennis Development Centre in Chennai, where she trains under Muralidhar Rao, former coach of Indian table tennis star Achanta Sharath Kamal.
She has since established herself as a consistent performer in Class 9, winning gold medals at the 2024 World Abilitysport Youth Games and the 2025 Youth Asian Para Games in Dubai. Her parents have remained a key source of support as she pursues her ambition of becoming a Paralympian.
India added to its para table tennis medal tally through Prachi Andhare, who won bronze in the women’s singles Class 6 after losing 0-3 to Egypt’s Al-Dayyeni in the semi-final.
Earlier, Sonalben Patel and Paralympic medallist Bhavina Patel also secured bronze medals in their respective events.
Sonalben finished third in Class 3 after losing 7-11, 5-11, 6-11 to South Korea’s Yoon Jiyu. Bhavina claimed bronze in the women’s singles Class 4-5, going down 7-11, 5-11, 7-11 to China’s Zhang Bian in the semi-final.
