New Delhi, October 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Jamia Millia Islamia on Saturday shifted all classes to online mode with immediate effect until further notice as a precautionary measure amid an ongoing student protest demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU).

The protest entered its 13th day, with several students on hunger strike demanding the restoration of the students’ union and the removal of the university’s Chief Proctor over what they described as a crackdown on protesters.

In an official statement, the university said the decision to move classes online had been taken to ensure the safety and security of students on campus while maintaining academic continuity.

“In view of the ongoing situation and in order to ensure the safety and security of bonafide students in the University Campus, the Competent Authority, JMI, has decided to conduct classes of all courses of the University through online mode with immediate effect until further notice,” the statement said.

The university added that the move was intended to safeguard students’ well-being and academic interests while ensuring that teaching and learning continued without undue disruption.

It directed deans, heads of departments, directors, faculty members and students to follow the online class schedule and participate regularly in academic activities.

Faculty members were also asked to make the necessary arrangements for conducting classes through online platforms and provide students with the required learning materials and academic support. The university said further instructions would be communicated through its official channels.

Meanwhile, protesters alleged that the university administration had resorted to physical force against students even as negotiations were underway.

The All India Students’ Association (AISA), in a statement, alleged that hunger strikers and the protest site were being targeted by the administration. It also criticised the decision to shift classes online.

A student speaking to reporters alleged that the administration was attempting to dismantle the protest site and force demonstrators to leave the campus.

“They are trying to remove our entire protest site and drive us out of here. They are creating a violent atmosphere inside the campus. But we are standing our ground. We are asking for our demands to be met. Just give us the union, please. Look at how they are dragging the students right now,” the student said.

The students have been protesting since October 12, demanding the restoration of the JMISU, which was dissolved in 2006.

The decision to move classes online marks a further development in the ongoing standoff between the university administration and protesting students, with demonstrators continuing to press for their demands.
