Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday said the fight against drugs must become a people’s movement, stressing that the campaign was not a political battle but an effort to protect the youth and future generations.
Addressing a gathering in Fazilka after joining the fourth phase of the Nasha Mukti Yatra, Saini said Punjab was once known for its prosperity, vibrancy and hardworking youth, but the drug menace had emerged as a major challenge to the future of its younger generation.
“The fight against drugs is not a political party’s fight, but a fight to save the youth and future generations,” Saini said.
He said the Nasha Mukti Yatra, which began on September 18, would continue till September 30 and cover around 4,000 km across all 117 Assembly constituencies of Punjab.
Saini said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country was fighting the drug menace with determination and called for participation from every section of society.
Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, Saini said it had promised to eradicate drugs within six months, but the problem continued to remain serious as the government entered the final phase of its tenure. He also alleged that the government had failed to fulfil its promises of providing employment to the youth.
Saini recalled that when industrialists from Punjab met him at his residence in Chandigarh and expressed their desire to set up industries in Haryana, he advised them to establish industries in Punjab itself so that employment opportunities could be created for local youth.
He claimed that the people of Punjab had made up their minds for a change and said the coming period would belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Highlighting Haryana’s governance, Saini said the state government had provided jobs to youth through a transparent system. He added that he met people at his residence daily and worked to resolve their problems.
According to Saini, the Haryana government had fulfilled 70 of the 217 commitments made before the elections and had advanced several welfare schemes for women, farmers, people with low incomes and youth.
The Haryana Chief Minister also stressed that tackling drug abuse could not be limited to law enforcement. He said treatment, rehabilitation, sports and employment opportunities needed to be pursued simultaneously.
Saini said Haryana was providing free treatment facilities at de-addiction centres, while special emphasis was being placed on connecting young people with sports and other positive activities.
