The Central government on Monday launched the 7th Edition of the National Formulary of India (NFI) and the ADR-PvPI 2.0 Mobile App for iOS users as part of the 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week programme organised by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC).

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers Anupriya Patel also unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening patient safety and pharmacovigilance, including a guidance document for hospitals on the “Safety Monitoring and Reporting of Medical Device-Related Adverse Events”.

The 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week is being observed from September 17 to 23, 2026, bringing together government officials, regulators, healthcare professionals, academicians, researchers and other stakeholders working to strengthen medicine safety and patient care.

Patel announced that the Biovigilance Programme of India has been approved to strengthen the reporting, assessment, monitoring and prevention of adverse events associated with medicines and biological products used in organ and tissue transplantation, including products administered to donors and recipients.

The 7th Edition of the NFI has also been made available digitally through NFI Online, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Patel emphasised that rational use of medicines and continuous safety monitoring are integral to public health, stressing the need to ensure that every patient receives the right medicine of assured quality.

She said India has developed a strong indigenous ecosystem for generating, collecting, processing and analysing medicine-safety data from across the country, describing it as an important dimension of Atmanirbhar Bharat in healthcare.

According to Patel, India has moved from the 123rd position during 2009–2014 to eighth globally in contributions to the WHO patient safety database.

She said the shift from primarily relying on safety information generated elsewhere to producing and contributing India’s own pharmacovigilance evidence reflects the strengthening of the country’s national capacity.

The Ministry said the pharmacovigilance, materiovigilance and biovigilance initiatives would strengthen safety monitoring across medicines, medical devices and transplant procedures.

Patel also highlighted digital initiatives including NFI Online, IP Online, the ADR-PvPI 2.0 Mobile App and the Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System (ADRMS), saying these platforms are making medicine-related information and adverse-event reporting more accessible, transparent and responsive.
