Actor Avtar Gill took a trip down memory lane on Saturday as the family drama ‘Baghban’ completed 23 years, sharing throwback photographs from the film and expressing gratitude to director Ravi Chopra, producer B.R. Chopra and the cast and crew.
Gill shared a series of pictures on social media, including a rare still featuring him alongside Amitabh Bachchan.
“23 years of Baghban. On this day in 2003, a film was released that went on to touch the hearts of generations and spark conversations about family, love, sacrifice and the respect we owe our parents,” Gill wrote.
The actor said being part of the film and its journey remains something he will always cherish.
Gill also credited the filmmakers, cast, crew and audiences for the film’s enduring place in popular culture.
“Even after 23 years, Baghban continues to live in the hearts of audiences and remains a story that resonates across generations,” he said, adding that the emotions associated with the film remain “just as powerful”.
Another photograph in the carousel recalled one of the film’s memorable festive sequences featuring the Holi song ‘Hori Khele Raghuveera’, picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and other cast members. The song was composed by Aadesh Shrivastava, with lyrics by Sameer.
Directed by Ravi Chopra and produced by B.R. Chopra, ‘Baghban’ starred Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini as Raj and Pooja Malhotra, a married couple whose lives change after Raj’s retirement.
The film centres on the couple’s expectations from their four sons after years of making sacrifices for their family. Their children’s reluctance to take responsibility for their ageing parents leaves Raj and Pooja hurt and forces them to confront changing family relationships.
Gill played Rawat, a bank manager, in the supporting cast. The film also featured Paresh Rawal, Lilette Dubey, Aman Verma, Sameer Soni, Divya Dutta, Suman Ranganathan, Asrani and Rimi Sen, among others.
Salman Khan made a special appearance as Alok Raj, the adopted son of Raj and Pooja’s family friend, while Mahima Chaudhry played Arpita Raj, Alok’s love interest.
Released on October 3, 2003, ‘Baghban’ remains associated with its emotional exploration of ageing parents, family bonds and the expectations shared by parents and children.
