Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday visited Purohit Ji Ka Katla in Jaipur to assess the damage caused by the massive fire that broke out in the market a day earlier and met traders whose shops and businesses were affected.
Gehlot expressed concern over the losses suffered by the traders and urged the state government to assess the damage and provide appropriate compensation without delay.
According to Gehlot, affected traders told him that no representative of the state government had visited the site or met them following the fire. He called on the government to send officials to meet the affected traders, hear their grievances and provide necessary support.
“The government should demonstrate sensitivity towards the traders who have suffered substantial losses,” Gehlot said, stressing the need for an immediate assessment of the damage and adequate compensation to those affected.
Speaking to the media, Gehlot appreciated the efforts of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire brigade teams, which reached the spot after receiving information about the blaze and launched rescue and firefighting operations.
He noted that there was no loss of life in the incident, but said the fire could have caused significantly greater damage had it spread further.
Gehlot also called for an inspection of buildings that have been issued Fire NOCs to ensure compliance with fire-safety requirements. He said corrective measures should be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The fire broke out at Purohit Ji Ka Katla on Thursday morning, engulfing several shops and warehouses. The presence of cloth, plastic and other combustible materials contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.
Firefighters faced difficulties because of the market’s narrow lanes but brought the fire under control after several hours of operations.
A short circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire, although the exact cause is still being investigated. No casualties were reported.
