RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat on Friday explained the distinction between ‘Dharma’ and religion while addressing young participants on the second day of the three-day Yuva Dharma Sansad at Gita Bhawan in Ujjain.
Bhagwat said Dharma does not bind an individual but liberates them. Explaining the difference between the two concepts, he noted that the English word ‘religion’, derived from ‘religio’, refers to binding or tying and therefore should not be treated as synonymous with Dharma.
He inaugurated the day’s proceedings by lighting a ceremonial lamp and leading the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’.
Bhagwat said there is no precise equivalent for Dharma in the English dictionary and argued that Western interpretations often reduce its broader meaning by focusing primarily on ritualistic aspects and equating it with religion.
Recalling the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, the RSS chief described India as a nation deeply rooted in Dharma. He also advised young participants to quieten and empty their minds before taking in new ideas, saying that learning becomes difficult when the mind remains occupied with existing notions.
He stressed that Dharma is not meant only for the elderly but provides guidance to the younger generation in navigating life.
Referring to the Mahabharata, Bhagwat said its final five verses encapsulate the essence of the epic and maintained that Dharma enables a person to attain ‘Kama’ (desire), ‘Artha’ (prosperity) and ‘Moksha’ (liberation).
He said that rather than lamenting over religious matters, a proper understanding and practice of Dharma can make life meaningful. Bhagwat also said that causing no pain to others represents the highest form of righteousness, while inflicting pain constitutes a grave sin.
Around 1,700 young students from across the country, along with more than 300 scholars, teachers, researchers and religious leaders, are participating in the event. Screenwriter and lyricist Manoj Muntashir was also present.
The programme includes discussions on contemporary subjects such as the existential concept of Dharma, Artificial Intelligence, and the conflict between information and ideas.
The Yuva Dharma Sansad is in its sixth edition and is being organised by Sevagya Sansthanam under the guidance of Acharya Mithileshanandinisharan Ji Maharaj, Peethadhishwar of Siddha Peeth Hanumat Niwas, Ayodhya.
Earlier editions of the event were held in Kashi, Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar and Kanchipuram. The next edition is scheduled to be held in Dwarka.
Among those present at the inaugural session were Prof. Shrinivasa Varkhedi, Vice-Chancellor of the Central Sanskrit University, and Ashish Kumar ‘Ashu’, President of Sevagya Sansthanam.
Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj of Juna Akhara, Smriti Anantlakshmi of Anadi Foundation and J. Nandakumar, National Convener of Pragya Pravah, are also guiding participants through lecture sessions.
