Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, along with Sports Minister Gaurav Gautam, felicitated wrestler Manisha Bhanwala for her historic gold medal-winning performance at the Senior World Wrestling Championships.
Manisha, a native of Siwaha village in Jind district, became the first Indian woman to win gold at the Senior World Wrestling Championships on October 30. The 25-year-old clinched the 59 kg title by defeating USA’s Abigail Elizabeth Nette 8-6 in the final in Astana, Kazakhstan, after recovering from a 0-6 deficit.
Sharing his thoughts on the meeting, Saini described Manisha’s achievement as a Diwali gift to the country. In a post on X, he praised her humility and respect for elders, saying these qualities reflected Haryana’s values and traditions.
Manisha’s victory marked India’s first gold in women’s wrestling at the Senior World Championships. India finished the competition with four medals — one gold, two silver and one bronze.
Kajal Dhochak and Neelam Sirohi won silver medals at the 2026 edition. Before Manisha’s breakthrough, Anshu Malik had come closest to the title with a silver medal in 2021.
In men’s freestyle, Vicky Hooda lost 0-10 to Iran’s Hassan Yazdani by technical superiority in the 97 kg repechage round.
