UNITED SIKHS Australia joined faith leaders and representatives of several religious communities at a multifaith gathering in Parramatta, Australia, marking the 40th anniversary of the historic 1986 Assisi Gathering for World Peace.
Organised by the Interfaith Commission of the Diocese of Parramatta, the commemoration was held at St Patrick’s Cathedral on October 27 under the theme “Unarmed and Disarming Peace”. Representatives of Christian, Sikh, Bahá’í, Muslim and Jewish communities participated, alongside an Indigenous cultural performance, to promote mutual understanding and interfaith solidarity.
Representing UNITED SIKHS Australia, Randeep Singh Grewal delivered the introductory address, drawing attention to the universal message of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji: “Na Ko Bairi, Nahi Begana” — “No one is my enemy; no one is a stranger.”
He said lasting peace begins with individuals rejecting hatred, prejudice and division and recognising the common humanity that connects people across communities.
The Sikh presentation, titled “Kirtan for Humanity”, featured Gurbani Kirtan by Bhai Tejinder Singh and Bhai Amar Singh, with additional vocal support from Grewal and Gurpreet Singh. A musical reflection by Bhai Gurpreet Singh followed, before Bhai Jatinder Singh of Samvaad-e-Sikhi led a prayer for humanity.
The presentation highlighted the Sikh principle of Sarbat da Bhala, or the well-being of all, and offered an opportunity to share Sikh spiritual traditions with participants from different faith backgrounds.
UNITED SIKHS Australia thanked the Diocese of Parramatta, its Interfaith Commission, chair Kate Xavier, the organisers and participating communities for bringing together people of different faiths to reaffirm the values of peace, dialogue and unity.
