Former India spinner Maninder Singh has called Kuldeep Yadav’s lack of regular game time a “mystery”, saying the team management does not appear to have enough confidence in the left-arm wrist-spinner.
Kuldeep has taken 201 wickets in 124 ODIs, more than any other bowler in India’s current squad, but did not feature in the recent 3-2 T20I series win over New Zealand. He has played only three of India’s 35 matches in SENA countries over the past two years.
“It’s because I think he is good in all kinds of formats. He has those variations, which are needed in all kinds of formats. Wrist spinners, especially left-arm wrist spinners, this breed is very rare in world cricket,” Maninder told IANS during a virtual interaction facilitated by Sony Sports Network.
He also compared Kuldeep’s situation with that of former left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, who, according to Maninder, did not receive enough opportunities despite bowling well. Maninder said Kuldeep could be effective in Test cricket too if given confidence and consistent chances.
Kuldeep could be considered for the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, beginning in Auckland on Wednesday. Maninder also urged Indian bowlers to focus on dismissing New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell rather than merely restricting his scoring.
“If you think that you shouldn’t let him make more runs then you are in trouble, as then you will start bowling flat,” he said, adding that Indian bowlers should take advantage of conditions in New Zealand.
On India’s spin options, Maninder said Naman Dhir had potential as an all-rounder and deserved opportunities, while Axar Patel could deliver his best with the right encouragement.
Maninder also said India were missing Hardik Pandya, describing him as an all-rounder capable of winning matches single-handedly. Hardik has not played since IPL 2026 due to fitness setbacks, including a recent shin problem.
Discussing the batting order, Maninder said the best batters should play regardless of whether they are left- or right-handed. He added that teams should not give excessive importance to the left-right combination at the top.
