New Delhi, October 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot with more than 5,000 flying hours across a variety of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, outgoing Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh will perhaps be best remembered for his leadership during Operation Sindoor. The operation reflected India’s air power superiority and modernisation, or, in his own words, showcased the force’s “destructive power” to the world.

The IAF demonstrated the spirit of “infallible, impervious and precise”, the theme for this year’s 94th Air Force Day, celebrated on October 8.

As he prepares to hang up his uniform on Saturday after more than four decades of distinguished service, Air Chief Marshal Singh leaves behind a legacy defined by operational professionalism, technological vision and leadership under pressure.

Born in Delhi on October 27, 1964, Singh began his military journey at the National Defence Academy before proceeding to the Air Force Academy. He was commissioned as a fighter pilot on December 21, 1984, and went on to establish a reputation as an exceptional aviator. He was among the select officers equally comfortable in the cockpit, in planning and training roles, and in the operations room.

Throughout his career, he combined operational expertise with technological acumen.

He commanded 22 Squadron, led the MiG-29 Upgrade Project in Russia and played a significant role in the testing and development of India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas. His association with Tejas made him a strong advocate of self-reliance in military aviation long before it became a national policy priority.

Behind his disarming smile and dreamy eyes lay the grit, determination, courage and straightforwardness that define a committed soldier and officer.

When Singh assumed office as Chief of the Air Staff on September 30, 2024, the IAF was facing modernisation challenges, procurement delays and the need to integrate emerging technologies into its force structure.

He soon drew attention for his candid assessments of capability gaps and his insistence that timelines promised to the armed forces be met. He was often praised for speaking plainly about the service’s requirements while maintaining a constructive approach to reform.

However, Operation Sindoor would become the defining chapter of his tenure. Launched in response to the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-aided terrorists, the operation represented one of India’s most significant military actions in recent decades.

Under his leadership, the IAF carried out precision strikes against terrorist infrastructure while coordinating closely with the Army and Navy in a joint campaign designed to achieve strategic objectives without uncontrolled escalation.

According to the outgoing IAF chief, the operation demonstrated the reach and flexibility of Indian air power, with strikes conducted across a front approximately 1,200 km wide and 200 km deep.

In a recent interaction, Singh inspired young cadets with a message about perseverance and personal growth. He stressed that many people who achieved great heights in life were not necessarily outstanding performers in examinations. He encouraged young officers to focus on discipline, character, leadership, continuous self-improvement and the determination to persevere.

These were principles he had followed throughout his own career, relying on determination, hard work and the ability to learn from challenges.

Beyond military operations, Singh earned admiration for remaining approachable despite occupying one of the country’s highest military offices. Colleagues often described him as grounded, authentic and deeply connected to the flying profession. Even as IAF chief, he sought opportunities to return to the cockpit, reflecting his lifelong passion for aviation.

His public interactions during and after Operation Sindoor also demonstrated his ability to explain complex military issues in language accessible to ordinary citizens.

His career can be viewed through three defining themes: modernisation, self-reliance and operational effectiveness. He championed indigenous capabilities, pushed for realistic procurement practices and guided the IAF through a major military operation.

Above all, he demonstrated how technology, training and leadership must work together to meet the demands of modern warfare.
