US President Donald Trump has warned that American forces could launch another round of military strikes against Iran if Tehran fails to reach an agreement with Washington, keeping the threat of further action alive despite his claims that Iran has been decisively defeated.
Addressing a Republican campaign rally in Fort Myers, Florida, Trump said the United States could repeat elements of its military campaign if diplomatic efforts failed to secure a deal.
“We may do another little Epic Fury, or they’ll agree. If they’re smart, they’ll just say, let’s get down to business,” Trump told supporters.
Trump cited Operation Midnight Hammer and Operation Epic Fury as evidence of the effectiveness of the US campaign, claiming the strikes had destroyed Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities and weakened its military and economy.
“We obliterated Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity with Operation Midnight Hammer,” he said, adding that subsequent military operations had reinforced the initial attacks.
The President did not specify the conditions Tehran would need to meet to avert further strikes.
“We defeated them militarily, financially and otherwise and now we are ensuring it’s done,” Trump said, indicating that Washington intended to maintain pressure on Iran while leaving the door open to an agreement.
In a separate interview with Florida television station WINK-TV, Trump said he expected the conflict to end soon, either through an agreement or by other means. However, he offered no timeline and did not clarify whether negotiations were underway.
Trump maintained that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons was the central objective of the military campaign. He argued that he had been compelled to order the attacks because of the potential nuclear threat.
He also claimed that Iran was facing severe inflation and financial difficulties as a result of American military and economic pressure.
Discussing the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said the US Navy was enforcing a blockade against Iran while allowing other shipping to pass. He also claimed oil shipments through the strategic waterway had increased despite the conflict.
