The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated legal proceedings for prosecution against Surya Food & Agro Ltd, the manufacturer of Priyagold Biscuits, after an inspection allegedly found the company using bran intended for cattle feed as a raw material in biscuits.
In a statement posted on social media platform X on Saturday, the food regulator said the inspection was conducted following a consumer complaint and revealed serious deficiencies in food safety and hygiene.
“Bran meant for cattle feed and not intended for human consumption was found being used as a raw material in Priyagold biscuit manufacturing as a source of fibre,” the FSSAI said, adding that the gunny bags containing the bran were marked to indicate that the material was meant for cattle feed.
The inspection also identified deficiencies in plant hygiene, pest control, raw material storage and segregation, personnel hygiene, premises maintenance and the handling of intermediate formulations.
The FSSAI said Surya Food & Agro Ltd’s licence had been suspended following the serious non-compliances. The competent authority subsequently granted sanction to initiate prosecution against the company for the alleged violations.
In separate action, the regulator said it had initiated prosecution proceedings against Dodla Dairy Limited and Ueir Organic Foods Pvt Ltd over food safety violations.
A regulatory sample of full-cream milk collected from Dodla Dairy Limited was initially declared substandard by the Food Analyst because it did not meet the prescribed milk-fat specifications under the applicable food safety regulations.
Following an appeal by the food business operator, the sample was referred to a Referral Food Laboratory. The laboratory confirmed that the milk was unsafe due to the presence of detergent or caustic soda and was also substandard because its milk-fat content was below the prescribed minimum.
According to the FSSAI, the findings established violations concerning unsafe and substandard food under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The competent authority sanctioned prosecution against Dodla Dairy Limited and other concerned food business operators associated with the product’s manufacture and marketing.
The regulator also said notices had been issued to Narpadham Foods, Sun Ridges Health Carers and Sha Kantilal Jayantilal.
