Three Indian nationals, including two women and a man, have died in a fire in Bochum in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region, the Indian Embassy in Berlin said on Thursday, as local authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
All three victims were studying in Germany, the embassy said, adding that the Indian Embassy in Berlin and the Consulate General of India in Frankfurt were in contact with local authorities and the bereaved families to provide necessary assistance.
“Three Indian nationals (two women and one man) have tragically lost their lives in a fire incident in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. All 3 were studying in Germany,” the embassy said in a post on X.
“The incident is under investigation by German authorities. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families in this hour of grief,” it added.
According to German media reports, the deceased have been identified as two women aged 25 and 27 and a 26-year-old man.
The fire broke out at a house in Bochum on Tuesday morning, local time. Emergency responders found the three bodies on the building’s second floor, German broadcaster WDR reported.
Firefighting operations were complicated by flames spreading upwards through the stairwell, preventing firefighters from using the stairs to reach the upper floors.
A 41-year-old resident of the house has been arrested on initial suspicion of murder, WDR reported, citing a Bochum police spokesperson. The man has been questioned by officers from the homicide squad.
Fire investigators have examined the property and reportedly ruled out a technical defect as the cause of the blaze. Authorities are investigating the possibility of arson and are seeking to establish whether the fire was deliberately set or accidental.
The Indian diplomatic missions said they would continue to coordinate with German authorities and support the victims’ families as the investigation proceeds.
