The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has appointed prominent Jalandhar-based politician Deepak Bali as Halqa Incharge of the Jalandhar Cantonment Assembly constituency, currently represented by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president and Congress MLA Pargat Singh.
The appointment assumes political significance ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, as it indicates that AAP may be preparing to field Bali against Pargat Singh in the constituency.
Bali, a hotelier, social activist and politician, is considered close to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab party incharge Manish Sisodia and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
He currently serves as Advisor to the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board under the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. He has also served as a general secretary of AAP Punjab.
In July 2025, Bali was appointed vice-president of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA).
Before emerging as a prominent political figure, Bali was actively associated with initiatives promoting Punjabi language and culture. He has been involved with Punjabi Jagriti Manch and the annual Maa Boli Punjabi March organised in Jalandhar.
Bali has also played a significant role in organising religious and cultural programmes across Punjab.
These include events commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, programmes such as ‘Ek Sham Shiv Ke Naam’ and ‘Humare Ram’, and statewide celebrations and Kirtan Samagams marking the 650th Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Ravidas Ji.
Until now, AAP leader and former Improvement Trust chairperson Rajwinder Kaur Thiara had been serving as the party’s Halqa Incharge for Jalandhar Cantonment.
Bali’s appointment in her place is being viewed as an indication that the party leadership may be preparing him for the electoral contest from this politically significant constituency.
Although AAP has not formally announced its candidate for the 2027 Assembly elections, the appointment places Bali at the centre of the party’s organisational and political activities in Jalandhar Cantonment, setting the stage for a possible contest with Pargat Singh.
