Singer Abhijeet Sawant, who won the inaugural season of Indian Idol two decades ago, is set to return to the stage that launched his career with Indian Idol: Legends Return, describing the experience as coming home.
Reflecting on his return, Sawant said the stage continued to hold a special place in his life, having given him his identity and introduced him to audiences across the country.
“There is a unique energy and excitement in standing on this stage—the very stage that gave me my identity. I am deeply gratified to be back here, sharing this experience with my former fellow contestants. Returning to ‘Indian Idol: Legends Return’ feels just like coming home,” he said.
The singer also expressed confidence that the upcoming appearance would receive an enthusiastic response from viewers.
“There is no doubt that the audience will shower even more love this time than they did 20 years ago,” he added.
A new promotional video offers a glimpse into Sawant’s journey, beginning with his first performance on the show. Music composer and singer Himesh Reshammiya, who features in the promo, praised Sawant for staying connected to his roots while building his own identity in the music industry.
Reshammiya also expressed confidence that Sawant’s return would add to the show’s appeal.
Following his Indian Idol victory, Sawant released his debut solo album, Aapka Abhijeet Sawant, in 2005. The same year, he made his playback singing debut with the song “Mar Jaawan Mit Jaawan” from the film Aashiq Banaya Aapne.
He subsequently released the album Junoon in 2007 and Farida in 2013. Sawant also ventured into acting, making his film debut with Lottery in 2009. He later appeared in Tees Maar Khan and made special appearances as himself in television shows including Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hai and C.I.D.
Indian Idol: Legends Return is scheduled to premiere on Sony TV on October 17, bringing Sawant back to the platform that marked the beginning of his musical journey.
