Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee on Monday moved the Calcutta High Court, challenging the withdrawal of his Z-Plus security cover following a change of government in West Bengal.
Banerjee, who had Z-Plus security during the previous TMC government led by Mamata Banerjee, has sought restoration of the cover, citing concerns over his safety. His counsel, Ayan Bhattacharya, requested an urgent hearing before the court.
The matter was mentioned before a single-judge bench of Justice Krishna Rao, which permitted Banerjee to file the petition and scheduled the hearing for October 6. However, the court did not allow the request for an immediate hearing.
Arguing on Banerjee’s behalf, Bhattacharya submitted that the MP had been entitled to Z-Plus security before the Assembly elections, but the cover was withdrawn after the results were declared.
“Before the Assembly elections, he was entitled to Z-Plus security. After the elections, his security was withdrawn. My client has been attacked several times. Currently, he has no security. There are only a few house guards. Let the matter be heard urgently,” the counsel told the court.
The petition comes months after Banerjee was allegedly attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district on May 30. He had travelled to the area to meet the family of Sanju Karmakar, a TMC worker who was allegedly killed in post-poll violence.
According to reports, a group of protesters allegedly surrounded Banerjee during the visit and hurled eggs, shoes and stones at him. He was also allegedly assaulted, and his shirt was torn in the incident. Security personnel escorted him through the area while he wore a cricket helmet. Banerjee later alleged that adequate police protection had not been provided.
Before the change of government, Banerjee had been provided Z-Plus security, with heavy security deployment at his residence in south Kolkata. Opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had questioned the level of protection extended to the Diamond Harbour MP.
Following the change of regime, state police removed the security arrangements at his residence. The state administration subsequently indicated that Banerjee would be provided security in line with arrangements applicable to other Members of Parliament.
The Calcutta High Court is scheduled to hear Banerjee’s petition on October 6, when the matter seeking restoration of his Z-Plus security cover will come up for consideration.
