Nepal has issued a travel advisory for tourists as authorities forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of the country from September 25 to 27, weeks after devastating floods and landslides claimed hundreds of lives.
The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) issued the advisory after the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) warned of extremely heavy rainfall in several areas of eastern Koshi, southern Madhesh, central Bagmati and western Sudurpashchim provinces. Some areas of western Karnali are also expected to receive heavy rainfall.
Parts of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces could also experience heavy rain, along with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds, the NTB said, citing the DHM forecast.
The warning comes after the devastating floods of August 26. According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 1,451 people had died and 5,705 remained missing as of Tuesday evening, including 636 foreign nationals.
Several visitors in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river basins were among those affected by the August floods.
The NTB urged tourists travelling to mountainous and high-altitude areas, particularly near river basins, to exercise extra caution as weather conditions can change rapidly and snowfall is possible at higher elevations.
Visitors have been advised to check updated weather forecasts and official advisories before travelling and remain informed about road, flight and trekking-route conditions. The board also asked tourists to avoid areas affected by severe weather or identified as high-risk.
The advisory called for particular caution near rivers, streams, steep slopes and landslide-prone areas. Tourists have also been advised to suspend trekking, mountaineering and other outdoor activities during unsafe weather.
The NTB further urged visitors to follow instructions issued by local authorities, security agencies, tourism professionals and other officials, and to move to safer locations in advance based on weather conditions and advice from tour operators.
