A Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced Huzair Farhan Baig alias Huzair to six years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 58,000 in a terror conspiracy case linked to the proscribed terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS), the agency said on Monday.
The case pertains to an alleged IS module operating in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district. It was initially registered by the Karnataka Police on September 19, 2022, before the NIA took over the investigation and re-registered the case on November 15, 2022.
According to the NIA, investigations uncovered an IS module operating clandestinely in Thirthahalli town of Shivamogga district. The agency said its members were allegedly guided by an online handler using the name “Colonel”, who was later identified as Mohammed Shaheed Faisal, an absconding accused in several NIA terror cases.
The NIA alleged that Faisal was involved in radicalising and recruiting youths to propagate IS ideology and facilitate terrorist activities in India.
The investigation found that Baig was allegedly radicalised and recruited by co-accused Maaz Muneer Ahmed and Syed Yasin. On Ahmed’s instructions, Baig allegedly arranged a hideout in Bengaluru for carrying out terrorist activities.
The agency further said Baig received cryptocurrency through accounts belonging to his friends. The cryptocurrency was subsequently converted into fiat currency and used for payments connected with the hideout. According to the NIA, Ahmed arranged the funds through the online handler.
The NIA said it has so far filed four chargesheets against 12 accused persons in the case. Three accused have already been convicted and sentenced to six years of rigorous imprisonment along with fines, it added.
The agency said efforts are continuing to trace Mohammed Shaheed Faisal, whom it has identified as the online handler who allegedly planned and conspired to establish the IS module.
