Several SpiceJet flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi were delayed or cancelled on Saturday due to operational disruptions, affecting a large number of passengers.
Delhi Airport advised affected travellers to contact SpiceJet for the latest flight information or seek assistance from airport ground staff.
“We regret the inconvenience faced by passengers due to the operational disruption of some SpiceJet flights. Delhi Airport teams are actively coordinating with the airline and relevant stakeholders to support affected passengers and provide necessary assistance,” the airport said in an advisory posted on X.
The disruption comes days after another incident at the airport on September 15, when around 200 SpiceJet passengers staged a protest following repeated rescheduling and delays of flights to Dubai. The airline had said it was arranging alternative flights after one of its aircraft was grounded.
SpiceJet has been facing financial and operational challenges, with a significant portion of its fleet remaining grounded.
The airline also faced regulatory action in July when the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) imposed a Rs 1 lakh penalty on SpiceJet for allegedly using deceptive design practices, commonly referred to as “dark patterns”, on its online flight-booking platform.
According to the CCPA, the airline’s booking interface automatically enrolled consumers in its loyalty programme and used pre-selected options to obtain consent for promotional communications. The authority said such designs impaired consumer choice and violated provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
The CCPA also found that consumers were deemed to have consented to promotional messages because the relevant option was selected by default, without requiring affirmative action.
Flight operations have also faced disruptions this month because of adverse weather and technical issues. On September 13, an Air India flight, AI431, was diverted to Lucknow because of unfavourable weather and poor visibility conditions.
