Actress Rashami Desai is set to return to Hindi television with the upcoming show Sayoneee after staying away from fiction for nearly eight years. The actress says she was not looking for a comeback, but for a role and story that gave her a sense of purpose.
Rashami revealed that she received several offers during her break but chose to turn them down because she did not feel connected to the stories or characters being offered to her.
Talking about her role as Maya in Sayoneee, she said the character is practical and grounded, rather than merely an imagined persona.
“As an actor, I wouldn’t deny that I received many offers, but I turned them down because I didn’t feel connected to the stories or the characters that were coming my way,” Rashami said.
She added that every artist wants to portray a well-written character and explained why she waited for the right opportunity.
“I wasn’t looking for a comeback on television; I was looking for a purpose. As an artist, we get a number of opportunities, but it’s not necessary to just be visible, work and earn money,” she said.
Rashami said she wanted to be part of something audiences would remember her for. “You should do something that people remember you for, and that’s what I am known for. Sayoneee has that spark. I feel the story is bigger than the artists themselves,” she added.
Sayoneee is scheduled to premiere on Star Plus and JioHotstar on September 23.
Rashami made her Hindi television debut with Raavan in 2006 and rose to prominence with her portrayal of Tapasya in Uttaran. She subsequently appeared in shows including Pari Hoon Main, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 6, Zara Nachke Dikha 2 and Nach Baliye 7.
She also made a special appearance in Salman Khan-starrer Dabangg 2. Her last small-screen outing was Wagle Ki Duniya – Nayi Peedhi Naye Kissey, based on characters created by cartoonist R.K. Laxman, including the iconic Common Man.
