Actress Salma Hayek has celebrated her Mexican heritage, reflecting on the deep influence of her roots on her family values, celebrations and connection to home.
Hayek shared a video montage on Instagram featuring a collection of photographs highlighting moments from her life and her connection with Mexican culture. She also paid tribute to the women who came before her, saying she carries a part of home with her wherever she goes.
“I wouldn’t change being Mexican for anything in the world. It’s in the way I love, the way I celebrate, the way I show up for my family, and the way I carry home with me no matter where I am,” Hayek wrote in the caption.
She added, “Today I celebrate Mexico, my roots, and all the women who came before me and made me who I am.”
Hayek began her acting career in Mexico, gaining recognition with the telenovela Teresa and the romantic drama Midaq Alley. She later moved to Hollywood and appeared in films including Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn, Wild Wild West and Dogma.
Her performance as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in the biographical film Frida earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making her the first Mexican actress to receive the nomination in the category.
Hayek subsequently expanded her work into film production while continuing to act in projects such as Once Upon a Time in Mexico, After the Sunset and Bandidas.
She also found commercial success with comedies including Grown Ups, Grown Ups 2 and The Hitman’s Bodyguard, besides lending her voice to animated films such as Puss in Boots, Sausage Party and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Her acclaimed dramatic performances include Tale of Tales, Beatriz at Dinner and House of Gucci. She also portrayed Ajak in Marvel Studios’ Eternals, which became her highest-grossing live-action film.
Hayek is married to businessman François-Henri Pinault, and the couple have a daughter.
