Meerut, September 16, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A chlorine gas leak at a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Pallavpuram Phase-2 of Meerut triggered panic on Tuesday evening, with several residents reporting breathing difficulties and eye irritation and multiple people being taken to hospital for treatment.

The leak was reported from the STP in N Pocket near the Akanksha Enclave locality at around 7 p.m. As the gas spread into the surrounding area, residents began leaving their homes, while police and emergency teams moved to evacuate nearby areas as a precaution. Reports said several people, including children, complained of breathing problems, coughing and irritation in the eyes.

The Pallavpuram Residents Welfare Association (RWA) advised residents to keep doors and windows closed, avoid going near the STP and follow safety instructions. Families were also urged to keep children, elderly people and those with respiratory problems away from the affected area.

Four fire tenders were deployed to contain the leak, while police, fire personnel and municipal officials reached the spot. The leakage was subsequently brought under control to a large extent. Municipal Commissioner Saurav Gangwar said the leak was caused by a valve, which was closed, and urged residents to remain calm.

Different reports put the number of people hospitalised at between 10 and 15. One report said 14 people, including four children and a local councillor, were admitted for treatment.

Authorities have begun investigating the incident and assessing the circumstances that led to the chlorine leak. No fatalities were reported in the immediate aftermath.
