Two Hindus, including a woman, were killed in separate incidents in Bangladesh, raising fresh concerns over the safety of minority communities amid reports of attacks against them across the country, local media reported.
In the first incident, 45-year-old Alif Chandra Dutta, a Hindu goldsmith, was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon while returning home from his jewellery shop in Mahadebpur upazila of Naogaon district on Monday night.
According to Bangladesh’s Daily Sun, Dutta left his shop at Mahadebpur Bazar at around 8:30 p.m. and was travelling home when a group of unidentified assailants stopped him near his residence in Dulalpara around 9 p.m.
The attackers allegedly robbed him of around six bhori of gold and Tk 7 lakh in cash before fleeing the scene.
Family members and local residents rescued the injured Dutta and rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Mahadebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Omar Faruk confirmed the incident and said investigators had not yet established whether the attack was solely related to robbery or whether another motive or personal enmity was involved. Legal proceedings are underway.
In a separate incident, 45-year-old Hindu woman Rani Sushil was allegedly stabbed to death inside her home in Hoanok Union of Maheshkhali upazila in Cox’s Bazar district.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday when an unidentified man allegedly attempted to enter her house with the intention of stealing. According to police and residents, Rani was cooking when she noticed the intruder and raised an alarm.
The attacker allegedly grabbed her face and stabbed her repeatedly before escaping, Prothom Alo reported.
Residents rushed the injured woman to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead after several hours.
Maheshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdus Sultan said preliminary information indicated that the intruder had attempted to enter the house for theft and attacked Rani after she raised an alarm. Police are working to identify and arrest the accused.
The latest incidents come days after retired Hindu school teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family were allegedly brutally murdered in Rangpur city.
Reports of attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, have continued to draw concern in Bangladesh, with incidents reported during and after the tenure of the former Yunus-led interim government and under the current Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) administration.
