Helly Shah Says She Saw Herself Evolve as an Artiste While Working on ‘Chumbak’

Mumbai, September 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Actress Helly Shah, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming streaming series Chumbak, has said that working on the show allowed her to discover and develop a new side of herself as an artiste.

The series marks Shah’s full-fledged comedy role. Although she has previously worked in the comedy space, she said her character Twinkle gave her an opportunity to explore a completely different dimension of her performance.

Shah spoke to IANS alongside Arjun Bijlani, Anant Joshi, Delnaaz Irani and Amyra Dastur during the promotions of the show in Mumbai’s BKC area. Recalling how she was offered the role, she said the character was unlike anything she had portrayed before.

“For me, this character is very different. I have done some work in the space of comedy but a character like Twinkle, I don’t think I’ve ever touched it,” Shah said.

She said playing Twinkle made her realise that she could attempt comedy and credited the makers for bringing out the best in the cast.

“While playing this part, I realised I could do comedy. I could at least try. Because as Anant said, whatever we did was based on what the makers narrated to us. He’s actually extracted everything from all of us,” she said.

Shah described the experience as a pleasure and said it helped her explore a side of her personality as a performer that she was previously unaware of.

“It’s been a pleasure because I explored this comedy side of me which I didn’t know existed. Or I could even try doing it. I have seen myself evolve while shooting for this show,” she added.

Recalling the moment she was offered the part, Shah said the makers called her while she was preparing to celebrate Navratri.

“It was just so precious because the makers called me and said that it is happening. It was Navratri, and I was getting ready to play Garba,” she said.

Shah has previously spoken about her transition from television to OTT platforms and the challenges involved in moving beyond the image created through television work.

For actors making the transition to other formats, overcoming preconceived notions can be a challenge. Shah has acknowledged that being labelled a “TV actress” is something many performers continue to encounter even after exploring newer mediums.

Chumbak is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 10.
