BJP Rajya Sabha member Dinesh Sharma on Sunday expressed gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister and the party’s central leadership following his appointment as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Sharma said he viewed the new assignment not merely as a position but as a responsibility towards the Constitution, the nation and public service. He pledged to discharge his duties with “complete devotion, honesty, and dedication”.
“My heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Prime Minister, Hon’ble Home Minister, and the party’s central leadership,” Sharma said in a post on X.
He also thanked senior leaders, well-wishers, friends and citizens for their continued support, good wishes and blessings.
“This is not merely a position for me, but a profound responsibility toward the Constitution, the nation, and public service. I pledge to fulfil this duty with complete devotion, honesty, and dedication,” he said.
President Murmu appointed Sharma as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Saturday. According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique, the appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge.
Sharma, a senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh, has extensive political, administrative and academic experience. Born in Lucknow on January 12, 1964, he served as Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2017 to 2022 in the Yogi Adityanath government, handling portfolios including higher education, technical education, science and technology, and information technology.
He served as Mayor of Lucknow twice, having been elected in 2006 and again in 2012, when he won by a record margin.
Sharma has also been associated with academia and has served as a professor of commerce at the University of Lucknow since the early 1990s. He has guided numerous research scholars.
He began his public life through student organisations and subsequently rose through the BJP’s youth wing before holding key organisational positions in the party.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a strategically important Union Territory in the Bay of Bengal. The Lieutenant Governor serves as the constitutional head and head of the administration, with responsibilities spanning governance, development and coordination with the Centre, including security, tourism, infrastructure and environmental conservation.
Admiral (Retd) Devendra Kumar Joshi has served as Lieutenant Governor since October 2017. Sharma’s appointment marks a change in the leadership of the Union Territory, and he is expected to assume charge shortly.
