India-Italy Ties Stronger Than Ever, Says Giorgia Meloni as She Thanks PM Modi for Record Milestone

Rome, September 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his wishes after her government became the longest-serving in the history of the Italian Republic, saying that relations between India and Italy are “stronger than ever”.

Meloni also expressed confidence that the two countries would further strengthen their ties and work together to advance the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

Her remarks came in response to Modi’s congratulatory message after Meloni’s government crossed the previous record for longevity held by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

“Thank you, dear Narendra Modi, for your words and for your friendship. The relationship between Italy and India is today stronger than ever,” Meloni posted on X.

She said the Special Strategic Partnership launched by the two countries recognised the importance of bilateral ties and reflected their shared intention to combine their respective expertise to create new opportunities for growth.

“I am certain that Italy and India, together, will continue to strengthen the bond between our Continents as well, working side by side also to develop the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor,” she added.

Earlier on Friday, Modi congratulated Meloni on becoming Italy’s longest continuously serving Prime Minister in the postwar period.

“Congratulations to my friend Prime Minister Meloni on becoming the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in Italy’s postwar history. This milestone is a reflection of the trust and confidence of the Italian people in her leadership,” Modi said in a post on X.

The Prime Minister also credited Meloni’s friendship with strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership and said he looked forward to continuing close cooperation to build a prosperous future for the people of both countries.

“My best wishes for her continued success in the years ahead,” Modi added.

Meloni became Italy’s first woman Prime Minister on October 22, 2022. Her government completed 1,413 days in office on Friday, surpassing the previous postwar record set by Berlusconi.

The latest exchange comes amid sustained high-level engagement between India and Italy. In July, Meloni had congratulated Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister and expressed her willingness to work with him to create new opportunities for the people of both countries.

In May, Modi undertook a two-day official visit to Italy, where he met Meloni and Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

During their meeting, Modi and Meloni agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a Special Strategic Partnership. The two leaders welcomed the strong momentum in high-level exchanges and agreed to hold annual leaders’ meetings, including on the sidelines of multilateral events, besides regular ministerial and institutional-level engagements.
