National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Tuesday met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing and discussed ways to strengthen peace and tranquillity along the India-China border and further improve bilateral relations.
Doval, who is India’s Special Representative for the India-China Boundary Question, arrived in Beijing on Monday for a two-day visit at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister and Politburo member Wang Yi. The meeting with Han Zheng took place ahead of the 25th round of the Special Representatives’ talks on the boundary question.
The Indian Embassy in Beijing said Doval and Han discussed measures to strengthen peace and tranquillity in the border areas and enhance bilateral ties across economic, political and multilateral platforms, in line with the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries.
Doval and Wang Yi are scheduled to co-chair the 25th round of the Special Representatives’ talks on Tuesday. China’s Foreign Ministry has described the mechanism as the main channel for negotiations on the boundary question and an important platform for discussing issues of mutual concern.
Ahead of the meeting, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the two sides would continue in-depth communication on the boundary issue in accordance with the understanding reached by their leaders. They would also exchange views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues.
India has consistently maintained that peace and tranquillity along the border are essential for the broader development of bilateral ties. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated earlier this month that maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas remains of utmost importance.
The two countries had also held the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs on August 6. India said both sides agreed to continue using diplomatic and military channels, including the WMCC and local commander-level meetings, to address outstanding issues and avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation along the Line of Actual Control.
The latest diplomatic engagement comes as New Delhi and Beijing seek to stabilise bilateral ties after years of tensions along the disputed border.
