Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the expanding global reach of Indian storytelling, with the streaming platform announcing the launch of the ‘Netflix India Storytelling Initiative’ to strengthen the country’s creative ecosystem.
The initiative aims to develop the next generation of Indian storytellers through strategic partnerships with key institutions and provide skill development opportunities across the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) sectors.
Sarandos said India has long been recognised as one of the world’s leading storytelling nations and highlighted Netflix’s experience of seeing Indian content connect with audiences globally over the past decade.
“India has always been one of the world’s greatest storytelling nations. Over the past decade, we’ve had the privilege of seeing Indian stories connect with audiences not just across India, but around the world,” Sarandos said.
He added that as Netflix enters its next decade in India, the platform’s focus would be on investing in creators who will shape the future of Indian storytelling.
“The Netflix India Storytelling Initiative reflects our long-term commitment to strengthening India’s creative ecosystem by creating more opportunities for emerging creators, because investing in creators is investing in India’s creative future,” he said.
Under the first phase of the programme, Netflix will collaborate with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) to develop an industry-focused curriculum in Visual Effects Mastery and Media Technology Workflows.
The initiative will also support Indian students through scholarships for in-person programmes at IICT, covering areas such as Interactive Comics and Sequential Art, Virtual Art Department Content Creation, Character Animation, E-Sports and Gaming Management.
In the second phase, Netflix will partner with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) to create a talent pipeline for emerging roles linked to accessibility in the entertainment sector.
As part of this effort, participants will receive training in areas including audio description writing and voice services to help make films and series more accessible for audiences with visual and hearing impairments.
