Diwali-related trade in Delhi has crossed a record Rs 1 lakh crore, while nationwide festive sales have exceeded Rs 6 lakh crore and are expected to cross Rs 7 lakh crore, according to figures compiled by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).
CAIT said buying activity peaked on Dhanteras, with strong demand across several categories, including gold, silver, jewellery, electronics, mobile phones, LED televisions, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners.
Clothing and fashion products, including sarees, suits, kurtas, readymade garments and traditional attire, also recorded brisk sales. Puja and decorative items, earthen diyas, idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, sweets and food products witnessed increased demand.
Automobiles, including cars, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, also saw encouraging sales. Handicrafts and Swadeshi products, including khadi, handloom goods, locally made decorative items and products manufactured by women’s self-help groups, recorded strong demand.
CAIT Secretary General and MP Praveen Khandelwal said Diwali-related business in Delhi had crossed Rs 1 lakh crore, while nationwide trade had exceeded Rs 6 lakh crore. With customer footfall continuing to rise and buying sentiment remaining strong, he said the national figure was expected to cross Rs 7 lakh crore.
According to CAIT, the festive business has generated economic benefits for small and medium-sized traders, street vendors, daily-wage workers, cottage industries, self-help groups, women entrepreneurs, artisans, transport operators and businesses involved in packaging, logistics and delivery.
Khandelwal said consumers were increasingly choosing Indian products, reflecting the impact of appeals for ‘Vocal for Local’, ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and Swadeshi goods. He said Indian artisans, manufacturers, small-scale industries and local entrepreneurs were receiving strong consumer support.
He also said the surge in market activity had provided fresh momentum to businesses following losses that traders had suffered due to the Opposition rally on November 1 and protests and demonstrations in Delhi over the past month.
Khandelwal said millions of traders, shopkeepers, street vendors, daily-wage workers and small entrepreneurs had benefited from festive buying. He added that while peaceful protest was a democratic right, political activities should not disrupt public movement, traders’ livelihoods or the daily earnings of families.
CAIT thanked the people of Delhi for their participation and enthusiasm during this year’s Diwali celebrations.
