BJP National President Nitin Nabin has accused Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of being used as an instrument to destabilise the country and create unrest, alleging that the Congress leader was acting as part of a “foreign toolkit”.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, Nabin referred to remarks by a Congress minister who had claimed that Rahul Gandhi had complete control over the “remote button” and could mobilise 40 lakh people to create anarchy whenever he wanted.

“You saw how a Congress Minister said that Rahul Gandhi has complete control over the remote button and that, whenever he wants, 40 lakh people are ready to create anarchy in the country. I believe this clearly confirms what we have been saying from the beginning — that Rahul Gandhi is being used as a toolkit to destabilise the country and create anarchy,” Nabin said.

He alleged that Rahul Gandhi did not understand the strength of India’s democratic institutions and traditions, adding that the country’s democratic roots were strong. Nabin also accused the Congress leader of questioning constitutional institutions after electoral defeats.

Explaining his “foreign toolkit” allegation, Nabin said the Leader of Opposition should participate in parliamentary proceedings and follow parliamentary traditions. He said political protests outside Parliament should also be conducted appropriately.

Drawing a comparison with the BJP’s political history, Nabin said his party had organised street protests and raised issues inside Parliament. He alleged that Rahul Gandhi had not risen through political struggle and accused him of treating democracy as his family’s domain.

The BJP chief also criticised Gandhi’s objections to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being conducted by the Election Commission of India. He questioned why the Congress leader had an issue with the removal of non-existent voters, claiming that electoral roll revisions had also taken place during Congress governments.

Responding to Gandhi’s challenge to debate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s position that such a discussion should take place in Parliament, Nabin accused the Congress leader of trying to imitate others. He urged Gandhi to raise his questions in the House, where, he said, they would be answered.

Nabin also questioned Gandhi’s development record in the constituencies he had represented in Kerala and Uttar Pradesh, asking him to identify achievements to his credit. He said Gandhi had become Leader of Opposition because of the number of seats won by his party.

The BJP president further claimed that party workers at different levels were capable of responding to Gandhi’s allegations and that the BJP’s senior leadership did not need to respond to his statements made outside Parliament.
