Karnataka Police are examining the possible involvement of a minor girl in the alleged murder of seven members of her family, including whether her father took her along while transporting and disposing of the bodies, Home Minister Priyank Kharge said on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Kharge said the investigation was progressing but only one of the seven bodies had been recovered so far. He said police were verifying the accused man’s statements about family disputes and the circumstances surrounding the killings.
The accused, identified as Indushekar, allegedly told investigators that strained relations with his wife’s family and frequent disagreements with his wife Divya were among the reasons behind his actions. Kharge said these claims were being examined independently.
On the minor daughter’s alleged role, the minister said preliminary information suggested that the accused had influenced her and made her believe his version of events. Police are investigating whether she abetted the crimes. The girl has reportedly told investigators that she merely followed her father’s instructions.
Investigators have also found that the accused allegedly wrapped the bodies repeatedly in adhesive tape before transporting them in a Toyota Etios. He is suspected of taking his daughter along during early-morning journeys to avoid attracting attention. Police seized the car, which carried a ‘Press’ sticker, and reportedly recovered rose water, bedsheets and other materials from it.
Police are also investigating allegations that the accused removed gold ornaments from the victims, selling or pledging some of the jewellery while retaining the rest. He reportedly showed no remorse during questioning.
Another line of inquiry concerns allegations that the accused and his daughter used threats involving the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to extort money from others. Police are also examining an earlier dispute involving vehicle parking and a complaint allegedly filed by the daughter.
According to the preliminary sequence being investigated, the alleged killings began on October 16 with the murder of Sunitha. The accused is then suspected of killing his mother-in-law Roopavathi, brother-in-law Shivakumar, wife Divya and son Puneeth, followed by another brother-in-law, Shankar, and his wife Nalini. Police are examining the alleged disposal of the bodies around Shiradi Ghat and Nandi Hills.
Missing-person complaints were filed on November 3. The investigation has now been transferred to Assistant Commissioner of Police Prabhavathi, while Additional Commissioner of Police Vamshi Krishna will supervise the probe.
Kharge said the investigation would take more time to establish the complete sequence of events and determine the facts, including the minor girl’s possible role.
