Chandigarh, November 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab on Wednesday gheraoed Congress Bhawan in Chandigarh, protesting the alleged assault and humiliation of senior Dalit Congress leader Ranjit Singh Tarkhan Majra by Punjab Congress leader Barinder Singh Dhillon. AAP leaders demanded strict action against Dhillon and justice for Tarkhan Majra.
Raising slogans against the Congress over alleged anti-Dalit and anti-Sikh conduct, AAP leaders and volunteers sought accountability from Rahul Gandhi, who was in Punjab for his ‘Insaf Rally’. Chandigarh Police used water cannons and force to disperse the protesters, detaining several AAP leaders and taking them to Sector 17 Police Station.
Addressing the protesters, AAP Punjab Halka In-charge from Sri Chamkaur Sahib, Jasvir Singh Garhi, said the police action was an attack on the Dalit community. He questioned Rahul Gandhi’s claims of seeking justice, saying the Congress had failed to deliver justice to its own Dalit leader. Garhi also referred to atrocities against Punjabis during Congress rule, including the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, the attack on Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the destruction and looting of the Sikh Reference Library, and the abduction and murder of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.
Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO accused the Congress of treating Dalits as a vote bank while denying them dignity and justice. He alleged that Tarkhan Majra was slapped, threatened and humiliated in front of his son despite having served the Congress for four decades. ETO demanded that the party expel Dhillon and ensure registration of a case against him under the SC/ST Act.
AAP MLA Ishank Chabbewal also criticised the Congress leadership, recalling the party’s opposition to Dr B.R. Ambedkar in the 1951 election. He questioned the silence of senior Congress leaders over the alleged treatment of Tarkhan Majra and said a party holding an ‘Insaf Rally’ must first ensure justice within its own organisation.
AAP MLA Rajnish Dahiya termed the alleged humiliation of a senior party worker in front of his son shameful. Referring to Tarkhan Majra’s video seeking justice, he questioned why Dalit Congress leaders were attending Rahul Gandhi’s rally instead of standing up for their colleague. Dahiya also criticised Bharat Bhushan Ashu’s reported response to the incident and demanded Dhillon’s expulsion and legal action.
AAP leaders accused the BJP and Congress of working together to suppress the voice of the Dalit community, pointing to the police action against protesters demanding accountability from the Congress. They said water cannons, force and detentions would not stop the party from raising the issue.
The protesters vowed to continue their agitation until Tarkhan Majra receives justice and action is taken against those responsible.
