Sanmarg Private Limited has acquired a 100 per cent stake in Tehelka.com Private Limited, marking its entry into the magazine segment and expanding its presence in digital media, according to a company statement.
The Sanmarg Group said it plans to invest further in Tehelka and convert the publication from a fortnightly to a weekly magazine. It will continue to publish in both print and digital formats.
The acquisition was completed in October from a group of investors who took over the entire shareholding of Tehelka.com in 2017. According to the statement, the investors also provided an exit to Tarun Tejpal and other minority investors. They said there had been no fresh litigation since their takeover and confirmed that Tejpal had no involvement in Tehelka or its operations.
Tejpal had earlier stepped aside as editor following a sexual assault allegation by a colleague. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced.
Sanmarg said the acquisition includes all print and digital assets, as well as intellectual property held since 2017. Arvind Chaturvedi has been appointed the new chief editor to lead the publication.
The statement added that the erstwhile owner, Anant Media Pvt Ltd, would handle all previous litigations involving Tehelka and retain sole responsibility for earlier guarantees.
Lifetime subscribers will continue to receive print copies and digital subscription access, as applicable, the company said.
The statement added that the group aims to comply with all applicable government rules, standards and regulations while building a meaningful experience of serious journalism for the Indian public.
Headquartered in Kolkata, Sanmarg describes itself as Eastern India’s largest Hindi media network.
