Veteran ghazal singer Talat Aziz has found an unexpected reason to celebrate after a devastating fire damaged his Mumbai residence — a specially commissioned harmonium that was initially believed to be beyond repair has started playing again.
Aziz shared a video on Instagram on Wednesday showing him playing the 13-scale instrument. Although its exterior bears signs of fire damage, the harmonium produces clear notes, while ash can be seen covering the singer’s fingers.
Recalling the moment, Aziz said he had commissioned the instrument with premium-quality reeds and used it extensively for his online music classes. When he first checked it after the fire, it would not produce any sound. A harmonium repairer, after seeing its photograph, had advised him that it was beyond repair and should be discarded.
However, when Aziz tried playing it again at his residence, the instrument unexpectedly came alive. He described the experience as one of immense joy and pleasant shock, saying the reeds had survived despite the damage to its exterior.
Calling it a reminder never to abandon hope, the singer expressed gratitude to Allah for what he described as a little miracle. He said the experience reinforced his belief that music could survive even the fiercest of fires.
The blaze broke out at Aziz’s Juhu residence on October 2. It reportedly started near an air-conditioner on the ground floor before spreading through the duplex apartment.
Aziz, his wife Bina, their two sons and trainer Sikandar Singh were affected. Bina was trapped on the upper floor and was rescued through a bathroom window with the help of a ladder. Five people were hospitalised due to suffocation but were later discharged.
The fire destroyed several valuable belongings, including Aziz’s harmoniums and Bina’s paintings. The recovery of the specially commissioned instrument has now brought the singer a moment of relief amid the loss.
