Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party has maintained its 100 per cent strike rate in the state’s Urban Local Body elections, winning every mayoral, municipal chairperson and nagar panchayat chairperson post it contested under the NDA seat-sharing arrangement.
The party secured the mayoral posts of Vijayawada and Eluru municipal corporations and won the chairperson positions in all 14 municipalities and three nagar panchayats allotted to it.
The performance mirrors Jana Sena’s record in the 2024 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, when it won all 21 Assembly and two parliamentary seats it contested.
Former MLA Vangaveeti Radhakrishna, who joined Jana Sena shortly before the municipal elections, was elected Mayor of Vijayawada. He defeated YSRCP candidate Rayana Bhagyalakshmi by 1,30,872 votes, securing 2,65,888 votes against her 1,35,016.
Radhakrishna is the son of prominent Vijayawada leader Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga, who was killed in 1988 while on a hunger strike. He was elected to the Assembly from Vijayawada East in 2004 on a Congress ticket.
Jana Sena’s Reddy Appalanaidu won the mayoral post in Eluru Municipal Corporation.
The NDA as a whole registered a sweeping victory, winning 94 of the 100 Urban Local Bodies where elections were held. Its candidates secured mayoral positions in 11 of the 13 municipal corporations, with counting still underway in Ongole.
The opposition YSR Congress Party managed to win one corporation and three municipalities. The BJP secured chairperson posts in all four municipalities it contested.
The Anantapur mayoral post, allotted to the BJP under the NDA arrangement, went to the YSRCP’s Ramesh Goud, who defeated BJP candidate Ajeesh Babu. TDP rebels also won in two municipalities.
Jana Sena’s results reflected its ability to expand beyond its traditional strongholds, with the party also fielding leaders who had joined from the TDP and YSRCP.
