Sussex County Cricket Club have appointed Beth Barrett-Wild as the first female chief executive in the club’s history, marking a significant leadership change as the county continues to build on the growth of women’s cricket.
Barrett-Wild, who previously served as Director of the Women’s Professional Game at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), will take up the role on January 1, 2027, after 13 years with the governing body.
During her time at the ECB, she held several key positions, including head of The Hundred’s women’s competition and tournament director of the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup. She joined the organisation in 2013 as Media Manager for the England Women’s team.
Her work has included developing the profile and reach of women’s cricket, leading the audience strategy for the 2023 Women’s Ashes and helping launch The Hundred in 2021. The women’s competition in the tournament has since attracted more than one million fans to matches.
Sussex chair Ed Warner welcomed the appointment, saying Barrett-Wild’s contribution had helped take women’s cricket to a new level and expressing confidence in her role in shaping the club’s future.
The club has also proposed former England bowler Holly Colvin as one of five new non-executive directors.
Colvin, 37, represented Sussex between 2005 and 2015, winning two Women’s County Championships. She also scored the winning run for England in the 2009 Women’s World Cup final.
Former Sussex Women’s player Alison Bruce has also been proposed for a board position. The other nominees are entrepreneur and cricket coach Paul Farris, business owner and former Sussex Young Cricketers’ vice-captain Mark Jeffries, and BBC journalist and Sussex member Callum May.
All five proposed non-executive directors will serve three-year terms, subject to ratification at the club’s annual general meeting in March 2027.
