Two police personnel were killed and another injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire on them while they were heading to join a polio vaccination team for security duty in Pakistan’s Mohmand district on Tuesday, local media reported.
The attack took place near the Hashim Kor police checkpost in Pindiali tehsil of Mohmand, Deputy Superintendent of Police Liaquat Ali said, according to Dawn.
The incident comes amid a series of attacks and abductions involving polio workers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On Monday, four polio workers were reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint in Tank district. In a separate incident, two vaccination team members abducted in the Azam Warsak area of Lower South Waziristan were later released. The Express Tribune reported that members of the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were allegedly responsible for the latter kidnapping.
Pakistan, along with Afghanistan, remains one of only two countries where wild poliovirus is endemic. The country has also reported a rise in polio cases, with the eighth case of 2026 detected in Khyber district on Sunday, according to the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication.
The affected child is a 13-month-old girl from Bara tehsil. It was the second case reported from Khyber district and the sixth from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Dawn reported.
In another attack on September 22, two police personnel guarding female polio workers were killed by armed assailants in Noshki district of Balochistan. The vaccination team members were unharmed, while the attackers fled with the policemen’s official weapons.
