Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and state Congress president B.K. Hariprasad attended a Diwali Milan gathering hosted by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at his residence in New Delhi, where party leaders exchanged festive greetings and discussed the political situation in the country.
Hariprasad, an MLC, shared photographs from the gathering and said he had extended special Diwali greetings to Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
He said the event brought together senior Congress leaders, Members of Parliament and prominent party figures from different states. Hariprasad described the interactions as cordial and said leaders exchanged views on prevailing political developments.
Shivakumar, speaking to the media in New Delhi late Friday, said Rahul Gandhi had conveyed Diwali greetings to party leaders and workers, carrying a message of unity, peace and love.
Asked about Rahul Gandhi’s political campaign, the Karnataka Chief Minister said it should not be viewed as an individual effort but as a campaign representing the country and the voice of its people.
Shivakumar said the Congress had given the country freedom, democracy and the Constitution, and argued that Rahul Gandhi, as Leader of the Opposition, was defending constitutional values, democratic institutions and people’s rights.
He also described the Congress party’s history as closely linked to the country’s history, saying its strength lay in ensuring equitable participation and sharing among different sections of society.
On a question about linking voter IDs with beneficiary schemes, Shivakumar said there were several aspects requiring discussion and that he would comment after deliberations.
The Diwali Milan provided an informal platform for Congress leaders from across the country to meet amid ongoing political developments.
