The mother of Asaful Malik, who was detained in Bengaluru over alleged links with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), on Saturday maintained that her son was innocent and expressed disbelief over the allegations against him.
Malik, son of Abed Malik, is a resident of Noapara under Jadurhati gram panchayat and Baduria Police Station in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. His mother, Hasina Bibi, lives at the family home there.
Bengaluru Police informed Malik’s parents about his detention on Saturday afternoon. Speaking to the media, Hasina Bibi said her son had been focused on his studies and was preparing for government examinations.
“My son was always engaged in studies. He graduated from Gobardanga Hindu College. After that, he started appearing for various competitive examinations to get a government job. He even tried for a police job,” she said, displaying his books.
She said Malik had also been preparing for the West Bengal Civil Service examination but eventually took up a security guard’s job in Bengaluru to support the family.
According to his mother, Malik left for Bengaluru around 18 months ago for the job and had not returned to his ancestral home since then. His father had already travelled to Bengaluru, she said, adding that the family expected to learn more about the case after he contacted the police.
Hasina Bibi repeatedly said she could not believe her son was involved in the activities alleged by the police. Neighbours also expressed surprise over his detention.
According to a Bengaluru City Police release, Malik was detained from the Bommasandra Industrial Area under the jurisdiction of Hebbagodi Police Station and subsequently questioned.
Police claimed that during interrogation, Malik allegedly said he had developed a desire for revenge against the Pakistan Army over what he described as atrocities against mosques and civilians in Pakistan. He also allegedly referred to the Israel-Palestine conflict and accused the Pakistan Army of supporting Israel.
“During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused came into contact with Imran Ahinder, a member of TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan) based in Afghanistan,” the police said.
The allegations remain under investigation.
