Veteran lyricist Sameer once shared his views on the growing similarity in the voices and singing styles of contemporary playback singers, arguing that the distinctive musical identities of earlier generations were increasingly missing from Hindi film music.
An old clip from his podcast ‘Sameer Ka Safarnama’, featuring a conversation with playback singer Javed Ali, has resurfaced on social media, drawing attention to his observations about changing trends in the music industry.
During the discussion, Sameer said that established singers of earlier generations had their own distinctive styles, while many contemporary performers appeared to follow a similar sound.
“Nowadays it seems that everyone is singing Arijit Singh,” he remarked, adding that singers such as Javed Ali brought freshness and a different quality to their performances.
He also expressed concern that the individuality once associated with composers, lyricists and singers was becoming less evident. According to Sameer, the creative conviction involved in making films and music had also weakened.
Recalling the recording culture of earlier times, the lyricist said musicians would spend time together, discuss songs and experiment through informal jam sessions before recording.
He cited the examples of legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar, recalling how they enjoyed the recording process, discussed compositions and exchanged ideas while working on songs.
Sameer contrasted those experiences with what he described as a more transactional approach today, where singers are often called in to record a song and leave without the same level of creative interaction.
He also stressed that filmmaking, despite being a collaborative process, remains a deeply personal creative experience.
The resurfaced conversation offers a glimpse into Sameer’s perspective on the evolution of Hindi film music and the importance of preserving individual artistic identities.
