Singer and actor Justin Timberlake has addressed long-standing speculation surrounding his 2006 hit ‘What Goes Around… Comes Around’, clarifying that the song was not based on his relationship with former girlfriend Britney Spears.
Appearing on Complex’s Re-Rank podcast, the 45-year-old musician said the track drew inspiration from a friend’s relationship breakdown rather than his own personal experiences.
Timberlake explained that his friend had shared details of a difficult break-up with him. After asking permission to turn the experience into a song, he received an enthusiastic response that gave him the idea for the track.
He said the song came together in nearly 20 minutes and that the creative process felt right from the beginning.
The song, released in 2006, had long been linked by fans to Timberlake’s 2002 separation from Spears. The speculation was fuelled by the timing of their highly publicised break-up and the themes of betrayal and heartbreak associated with the track.
Timberlake and Spears first met as children while appearing on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club and began dating in 1999.
Their past relationship also came under renewed scrutiny following the release of Spears’ 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me. In the book, she criticised the music video for Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’, which featured a woman resembling her. Spears said the portrayal made her appear like a woman who had betrayed the heart of a celebrated pop star.
Timberlake’s latest comments offer his explanation for the inspiration behind one of his best-known songs, which has remained closely associated with his relationship with Spears in popular discussion.
