Veteran playback singer Kumar Sanu has revealed that he faced threats from the underworld during the peak of his career in the 1990s but managed to deal with the situation without paying money, relying instead on his popularity and the goodwill generated by his songs.
Speaking during a conversation with IANS at his residence in Mumbai’s Andheri West, the singer said the threats came when his success following the release of Aashiqui made him a recognised star and people assumed he had accumulated considerable wealth.
Sanu said he chose to speak directly to those threatening him, reminding them that they were also admirers of his music.
“I told them, ‘You are my fan. You listen to my songs’. They accepted it. They said, ‘No, no, no. You don’t worry. You just keep on singing’,” he recalled.
The singer said he did not have to pay anyone or take any other measures to resolve the situation, adding that his talent and music helped him overcome the difficult period.
“Your talent never betrays you. It gave me success in this too. I was saved,” he said.
Sanu shared the experience while promoting Suniyo Zara, a song featuring him alongside fellow playback singer Udit Narayan, whom he described as a friend as well as a professional rival.
He also spoke about how he came on board for the track, revealing that he did not initially know which actor the song was being recorded for or who would be sharing the microphone with him.
According to Sanu, a music producer approached him to lend his voice to a song. He agreed and learnt only after reaching the recording studio that it was being composed for the film Suryaa and that Udit Narayan would also be part of the recording.
