Kavem Hodge struck an unbeaten 140 to put the West Indies in a commanding position against Bangladesh on day four of the second and final Test, taking their lead to 315 runs at stumps on Sunday.
The visitors reached 345/3 in their second innings after 83 overs, with debutant Kevin Wickham contributing 78 and opener Brandon King scoring 61. Bad light forced an early end to the day’s play, leaving Bangladesh with a formidable challenge on the final day.
Hodge, who registered his third Test century and crossed the 1,000-run mark in the format, shared a 131-run partnership with Wickham. Their stand helped West Indies consolidate after resuming at 7 without loss.
King and Joshua Da Silva had provided an 85-run opening partnership before Taijul Islam dismissed Da Silva leg-before for 36. King reached his half-century off 62 balls but was eventually caught at slip by Najmul Hossain Shanto off Mehidy Hasan Miraz after making 61 from 84 deliveries, including 11 fours and a six.
Wickham continued his impressive debut by recording his second half-century of the match, becoming the first West Indies batter in 48 years to score a fifty in each innings of his Test debut. He was dismissed for 78 when a leading edge off Taijul was caught by the bowler.
Hodge completed his century after the tea interval and remained unbeaten. Amir Jangoo, who had scored a hundred in the first innings, was 24 not out as the pair added an unbroken 61 runs for the fourth wicket.
West Indies, who won the opening Test in Mirpur, are now strongly placed to secure a 2-0 series victory. Bangladesh, who made 386 in their first innings against West Indies’ 356, will need a substantial effort to turn the match around.
Brief Scores: West Indies 356 and 345/3 in 83 overs (Kavem Hodge 140 not out, Kevin Wickham 78; Taijul Islam 2/118, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 1/58), lead Bangladesh 386 by 315 runs.
