Former India opener WV Raman has paid tribute to Mohammed Shami following the fast bowler’s decision to retire from Test cricket, recalling his early development under Raman’s guidance in Bengal’s domestic setup.
Shami announced his retirement from the longest format on Friday night, bringing the curtain down on a career in which he claimed 229 wickets in 64 Tests, including six five-wicket hauls. He finishes as the sixth-highest wicket-taking Indian fast bowler in Test cricket.
“Mohd Shami has been a delight to watch all these years during which time he made an indelible impact in the toughest format of the game arguably — Test cricket! Well done Shami.. Have fun till you have had enough of this game..” Raman wrote on X on Sunday.
Raman was coaching Bengal’s senior men’s team when Shami made his Ranji Trophy debut against Assam on November 17, 2010. The fast bowler went on to become one of Bengal’s leading performers before earning his India debut in 2013.
Originally from Sahaspur Alinagar village in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district, Shami moved to Kolkata to pursue better cricketing opportunities and gradually established himself through club and domestic cricket.
His record was particularly impressive in overseas Tests, where he took 145 wickets in 41 matches at an average of 30.33. In India, he claimed 76 wickets at an average of 22.10.
Shami’s last appearance in Test cricket for India came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia.
Although his Test career has ended, the pacer will continue playing white-ball cricket. He has been named in Bengal’s 19-member squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which begins on November 14.
Bengal will open their campaign against Karnataka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. They are placed in Elite Group A alongside Karnataka, Chandigarh, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Baroda, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
