Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi revisited memories of Diwali celebrations at the Gandhi family home, recalling how the residence of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was traditionally illuminated with hundreds of earthen lamps.
In a video shared on her official X account on Sunday, Sonia Gandhi and her daughter, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were seen discussing festive memories in the garden of Indira Gandhi’s former residence at 1, Safdarjung Road.
The interaction comes ahead of the release of Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love.
Recalling the celebrations, Sonia Gandhi said an idol of Lord Ganesha used to be placed at the entrance, where the family would light the first diya. The idol, she said, is now kept at her own residence.
She remembered how the entire house was decorated with earthen lamps, as electric decorative lights were not commonly used at the time.
“ We had diyas everywhere, along the pond, all along the roof, verandah and wherever there was a path. It was very pretty,” she recalled.
Priyanka Gandhi said the family celebrated both Holi and Diwali, with people from different walks of life gathering in the garden.
The conversation also turned to firecrackers. Sonia Gandhi jokingly recalled how people would go overboard with them, while Priyanka remembered her father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, taking her and her brother Rahul Gandhi to Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk to buy crackers.
Sonia Gandhi said she was comfortable with sparklers, or phuljhadis, and fondly remembered the clear blue skies during Diwali in those days. Priyanka echoed the memory, saying she could still recall the blue sky above the garden.
Sonia Gandhi also spoke about the traditional festive food served at the family home, particularly Kashmiri dishes and sweet rice, which the family continues to prepare.
She concluded by extending Diwali greetings.
