Bangladesh batter Towhid Hridoy on Sunday described his unbeaten 242 against the West Indies as a dream come true, a day after registering the highest individual Test score by a Bangladesh cricketer.
Playing only his third Test, the 25-year-old surpassed Mushfiqur Rahim’s previous national record of 219 not out, scored against Zimbabwe in 2018 during the Mirpur Test.
“Definitely, it was a dream of mine, to be very honest. I’m delighted that it has come true, and perhaps a little earlier than I expected. I’m grateful for everything,” Hridoy told broadcasters ahead of the fourth day of the second Test at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
“When you play Test cricket professionally, you have to do your best for the team. There are so many records in Test cricket, so whenever you get an opportunity, you have to make the most of it,” he added.
Hridoy rescued Bangladesh after the hosts slipped to 51/3 in reply to the West Indies’ first-innings total of 356. He shared a 73-run fourth-wicket stand with Mushfiqur before adding 117 runs with Taijul Islam, who scored 22, for the eighth wicket.
He also received valuable support from Taskin Ahmed in an 85-run ninth-wicket partnership. The stand helped Hridoy break the national record and gave Bangladesh a 30-run first-innings lead, with Taskin contributing 12.
Crediting the two tailenders for their support, Hridoy said, “Taijul and Taskin played really well. The way they supported me gave me a lot of confidence. I have no target for now, just want to do what the team needs.”
He added that his priority remained contributing to the team’s requirements in every situation.
