Congress leader Udit Raj has defended Sonia Gandhi’s reported emotional response to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, saying she was deeply concerned about the country’s situation and its social fabric.
The BJP had questioned the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson’s reported reaction to the events of December 6, 1992.
Speaking to IANS, Udit Raj said the issue went beyond the demolition of the mosque. “The demolition of the mosque was certainly a tragic incident. Her concern was about the country’s social fabric, considering that there are 25–30 crore Muslims in this country,” he said.
“If such a large population is viewed with hatred, excluded from the mainstream and targeted, it will affect India’s progress. She was crying for the country and was emotional about the condition the country was in,” he added.
Ahead of the launch of her memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, Sonia Gandhi recalled in a recent interview that she broke down in tears while watching the Babri Masjid demolition on television in 1992.
On Saturday, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi questioned the account, arguing that Indian television had not broadcast the demolition live throughout the day. He sought clarification about the source of the footage that had reportedly moved Sonia Gandhi to tears. Trivedi also questioned whether her sympathies were with Ram Janmabhoomi or the mosque.
Meanwhile, Udit Raj criticised the BJP, describing it as a “quadruple-engine government” rather than a double-engine or triple-engine government. He alleged that despite the municipal corporation, state government, Lieutenant Governor and central government being under the BJP’s control, conditions were deteriorating.
