Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday extended Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas greetings to Punjabis across the world, while Governor Gulab Chand Kataria urged people to pledge to make Punjab and Chandigarh drug-free.
In his message, Mann wished Punjabis in India and abroad “a very happy Diwali, the sacred festival of lights. We pray to Waheguru that this festival brings joy, laughter, prosperity and light to all your homes. Let us come together to celebrate a pollution-free, green Diwali and do our part to make Punjab ‘Colourful Punjab’ once again”.
The Chief Minister also greeted people on Bandi Chhor Diwas, commemorating the release of 52 Hindu princes from Gwalior Fort by the sixth Sikh Guru, Sri Hargobind Sahib, on Diwali in 1612.
He appealed to people to celebrate both occasions with traditional fervour and rise above divisions of caste, colour, creed and religion to strengthen social harmony.
Governor Kataria, in his Diwali message, called for collective efforts to make Punjab and Chandigarh drug-free.
“Let us all come together and pledge to make Punjab and Chandigarh drug-free. An aware society, healthy youth and a secure future are the true symbols of our prosperity. I pray to the Almighty that this festival brings happiness, prosperity, good health and renewed energy into your life,” he said.
Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan also extended greetings, describing Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas as symbols of the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
He said Diwali brings peace, happiness and prosperity, and prayed for the fulfilment of people’s aspirations. Emphasising righteousness and solidarity, Sandhwan urged people to follow the ideals of Lord Ram and remain united for the welfare of humanity.
He also appealed to people to celebrate the festivals together while strengthening cultural heritage, mutual harmony and peace across Punjab and the country.
